Trump Demands Imprisonment of Chicago Leader and State Executive as National Guard Deploy in City

Former President Donald J. Trump on midweek called for the incarceration of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of not safeguarding federal immigration officers.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for failing to secure Immigration agents!" Trump posted on social media Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor too!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic party.

These remarks come alongside the deployment of National Guard personnel in the Windy City area under orders from the current government, notwithstanding strong objections from state officials such as Pritzker and Johnson.

"This represents yet another attempt where Trump attempted to have an African American leader unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on that day. "I'm not going put."

The governor responded via social platforms, stating: "I refuse to yield. Trump is now calling for imprisonment of democratically chosen representatives checking his power. What remains on the road toward complete authoritarianism?"

By Wednesday morning, military units from the Lone Star State had reached the Elwood training facility, an army base approximately 50 miles from the city, as the federal government pushes forward with its aggressive urban crime policy and mass deportation efforts.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", even though police data indicate significant drops in many offenses, including homicides.

On Wednesday, 200 Texas National Guard troops were scheduled to arrive to the region, with another 300 state military forces readying for deployment, according to sources. Officials reportedly stated the soldiers would avoid police functions but would protect federal immigration agents and their facilities.

Soldiers in combat attire with state guard insignia were observed at the military facility in Elwood. Vehicles labeled "Disaster Relief" dropped off portable toilets and other supplies. Trailers were set up in rows. Extra barriers was installed around the perimeter.

Aviation authorities imposed no-fly zones over the army reserve center for safety concerns until 6 December.

The administration has escalated immigration enforcement in Chicago in the past month, triggering protests, especially near an processing facility in Broadview.

On Monday, Illinois and Chicago initiated legal action against the administration, seeking to block the National Guard deployment, asking a court to stop what they call "the president's proclaimed 'War'" on Chicago and Illinois, labeling it "illegal and dangerous".

Legal proceedings on their case is set for the next day.

The mayor also issued an executive order on that day banning ICE officers and others from using city-owned property as staging areas for deportation efforts.

The governor has accused Trump of using troops as "political props" and "pawns".

During a press briefing on the previous day, he said that Trump is trying to "rationalize and normalize the presence of armed soldiers under his direct command."

The nearly 150-year-old federal law restricts the military's role in civilian law enforcement. Yet, Trump has stated he would be prepared to activate the emergency powers, which permits a commander-in-chief to dispatch active duty military in states that are unable to suppress an uprising or are defying national authority.

Since starting his new administration, the president has sent or discussed sending military units to over ten urban centers, such as major metropolitan areas and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the armed forces is necessary to fight violence and protect immigration agents.

Data indicates that serious offenses nationwide has decreased in recent years. In Chicago, for instance, murders were reduced nearly one-third to 278 through August, per law enforcement reports.

A recent poll published on Wednesday revealed that most Americans disapprove of the sending of troops without an foreign danger.
