Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
