Security Guidance for Defence Personnel
During a recently aired interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister said that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however noted that security is a concern in every modern cars.
We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any car, due to the growing threats of surveillance that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those secret talks in protected areas. This is a prudent and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every cars from China, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
