The atmosphere at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had let in ten goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Unraveling?
Had their campaign falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, before he publicly stated that the board had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were facing for accounting issues. Reports that he might quit were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club became as messy during matches as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it has been hard to tell if they are improving or self-destructing.
The Youngster's Unforeseen Return
One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this season. He completed the last one with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his parent club were pushing for him to remain there for another season. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to thin their squad lacking backup options.
He signed in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."
Finding His Natural Fit
It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to identify the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
