Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Police report they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Police then discovered many other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report early analysis show the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; authorities are not yet aware of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.
An important political figure commented the vandalism left him speechless and required to be solved quickly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
